I've been into strength training for the past 6 months (resistance training and sports for much more) and I don't think it does, but the exercises that they did weren't correct in my opinion.

The resistance training that they did was for muscle hypertrophy and not strength training which works less if you are obese. After you achieve the desired muscle mass, then the calories burned will be substantial.

So for an overweight person, I'd advise aerobic exercises first to get conditioned and lose some weight and increase your metabolism. And then move into strength training to develop muscular strength and neuro-muscular adaptation.

Apart from the usual science reporting calamity (sounds too much like spot reduction), can someone explain this study to me? You have two sets of training regimen, an then your conclusion is that one set decreases your fat levels more because it burns more calories. I can't find the study or even a decent abstract, just a small blurb at the university's site[1], but that looks like a huge case of Doctor Obvious to me.

What's the common factor? Did both exercise regimens take the same time, so you'll get more calories/minute from aerobic exercise? That would make sense, but just comparing two different sets is like saying that soccer is healthier than basketball, if you partake in one match per week. Yes, there's a difference in the sports themselves, but the bigger one is probably that soccer takes 90 minutes while basketball is 40 (right?).

Strength training will increase the amount of muscle tissue, and muscle tissue burns calories at a faster rate than any other tissue. Aerobic training will burn calories faster, but losing both fat and muscle. The result is that you might loose weight with aerobic training alone, but you will gain a lot more fat when you quit training, because you will have less muscle than before. So, the right choice is to build muscle with strength training AND burn fat with aerobic training.
