I'm a bit surprised the Economist published an article with such weak arguments as a counter. Mr.Li writes:
> I would suggest that when it comes to outcomes, China doesn’t score so badly. The country has its problems—inequality, corruption and environmental degradation to name a few
These problems are faced by all other nations. The crimes against humanity the CCP continues to commit against Uyhgurs are absent from the UK. This is exactly the violence that Toomas Hendrik Ilves writes about his father escaping, and a direct consequence of the absence of "Liberal Democracy".
>The government has been tackling them aggressively. This is probably why a vast majority of Chinese people tell pollsters that they are generally satisfied with how the country is being governed
Again, if you allow "confiscation of homes and property; denying schooling and jobs to the children of the repressed; restrictions on travel; midnight arrests by secret police. It leads to extrajudicial killings; people “disappeared”; lives destroyed." (from Ilves) If you have a social status sofware that tracks dissent and imposes social punishments you will reduce dissent. If you abduct critics and forbid opposition, you will only hear the voices of those who agree.
