Ask HN: What Is Happening to the Market?

3 points by jokestir ↗ HN
I am a dev with 6+ years of experience.

What is happening to the dev market? I can't help but notice a trend.

On twitter, I see 17 year old devs pulling in 120k+ annual income [1].

At 17, I had not even started my college yet.

Is this the new normal?

It all seems to be a bit surreal seeing teenagers make so much money in high school while they struggle to even make a proper git commit.

Alas, it is not just teens who sometimes struggle to even make a proper git commit.
What's wrong with that? Salary is all relative to cost of living. And Git is typically not taught in schools.
Seems like I am out of touch with reality then.

If 17 year olds with no experience get that much, then I dunno about experienced devs.

Experienced devs can make much more than that. Does that surprise you?
If Twitter was reflective of broader reality, Bernie would have been president 3 times already
Software dev salaries are going up quite a bit. And when I was 17 I probably had enough experience doing software dev to justify getting hired. It's even easier today to get relevant experience at that age. I don't really see it as all that surprising.
