I remember I read it as a kid (my father bought one of these used, almost new, in - I believe - 1972 or 1973, maybe 1974).

The advice in "Before getting behind the wheel" (part of the checklist to be used "each time you use your VW - in practice daily) remained stuck in my head since, it must be the least checked safety checklist ever.
