The problem, and why we will not see any solution any time soon is because people now want to live outside reality.
It's not that there are no homes, it's just that everyone is fighting for the most desirable homes and the most desirable locations, and the homes all must be detached.
You can still get a decent townhouse or semi detached, but God forbid having to live in a townhouse like a refugee.
I have had some smart friends pick up and move because they could either buy a house with their savings or sell what they have and buy a new home cash with money left over to pay off debt.
It's like the average guy complaining about the gas mileage on a Ferrari.
