Ask HN: Science books to read aloud with older child (10)

I'm looking for expository books about science (especially biology and chemistry) that I could read aloud to my son, who is 10.

The books that work best for us are generally those that aren't written for children specifically. Carl Sagan's book "Cosmos" was close, but cosmology didn't grab him.
