Ask HN: Sales Engineers, how did you move into software engineering?

I'm tired of playing second fiddle to slimy sales folks and being talked down to. I also enjoy the implementation details of a project more so than just high-level talking points and a scripted demo. Everything is always a firedrill, no sprint planning, or the ability to do deep focused work, I'm constantly context switching to answer some question from an account exec.

I have some experience building data pipelines and APIs with Python and Go, but lack algorithm fundamentals. I do get along really well with our internal SWEs and enjoy chatting with them much more than my own team and manager.

I know the grass is always greener and moving to SWE would bring constant pressure to ship working code which is something I haven't experienced with my own hobby coding. At my current company I can't interview internally for another year, and I'm not sure my manager it would support it anyway.

I'm curious if any SEs have made the transition to backend development fulltime and how they did it? Alternatively, are there any companies that have a culture where SEs and pro-serve is treated with respect and not looked down on by sales execs?
