On a hunch, a friend recently discontinued use of an OTC PPI having taken it for several years; after dealing with the rebound acid, she mysteriously began seeing relief in multiple autoimmunities. This study (and several before it) seem to confirm a link between the impact of chronic PPI use on gut health with the development and severity of autoimmune diseases - well, at least in the 3.4 million patients in the study groups.
If I take any OTC PPI I find I can't sleep a wink. I talked to my doc about it and searched the literature and didn't find any evidence that anybody else has the same problem.

I have no such problem with H2 antihistamine antiacids though.
