Ask HN: Topic Separation?

I know HN doesn't support categories or tagging (and would imagine there has been long and drawn out discussions about why not?) - but one thing that strikes me is that often the most interesting discussions on here are about things that aren't code-y in nature.

Has anyone given any thought about how to use the API to separate out discussion types (like this) at all? Or...is it just me that'd be interested in this?
