Ask HN: Cheapest AWS egress with volume commitments?

3 points by truetraveller ↗ HN
AWS egress can go as low as $0.05 with >150TB volume. It takes $10k/month spend to get to this threshold. This is advertised on their website at https://aws.amazon.com/s3/pricing.

Before contacting sales for a higher discount, I want to know what volume discounts you or your company are getting. Is $0.02 or $0.01 possible? Is there a monthly commitment/threshold? If not AWS, is this is possible with Azure/GCP?

If your egress is significant, you might consider Direct Connect. You get $0.02/GB egress with Direct Connect. You'd have to rent space in a data center and pay for cross connections to both AWS Direct Connect and an Internet carrier, but those are fixed monthly costs that would get your variable egress cost down to $0.02/GB without talking to the AWS sales department.
Most of my egress bandwidth is public. I would have to pay Direct Connect + egress of the data center, which can still be significant. Not to mention added complexity.
You can get 1G or 10G ports with an Internet carrier (Cogent, HE, etc.) for a fixed monthly fee, so the only variable egress fee would be from AWS. The fixed cost is nontrivial and it's definitely a ton of complexity though, which would have to be justified in variable cost savings.
