From article: "The coin mining fee is currently 15% of the crypto allocated to the miner."

Malware scanners become malware.

15% is just straight up daylight robbery. Shockingly brazen.

For comparison XMRig's default developer donation is 5% and can easily be changed to 1%. (It's open source of course, so only slightly less easily changed to 0.)

I'm anticipating an, "oops, we didn't mean to enable this by default; thanks for your compute time. Apply for a rebate [here]." notice at some point...
I was ready to dislike this on principle, but was surprised to find myself slightly interested in the product.

What’s a good way to get started with CPU mining Etherium?

The first step is to know the price of electricity where you live.
Just in case Norton bloat isn't slowing your computer down enough with all their system "protection", you can now make your system even slower with crypto!

I can't wait to see hackers exploiting Norton installs to steal Ethereum from Windows computers en-masse...

Imagine being someone who wants to do that, then going to work at Norton to make sure your malware doesn't get shitlisted. Perfect plan on paper, and consumers will never suspect one of the people meant to protect them.
Yet another good reason to lie when a company asks me to install virus scanner to access their corporate network from my linux system.
And this went largely unnoticed by most of the online community.
I keep forgetting software like Norton actually stil exists. Being remindede by news that they implemented is f*cking hilarious.
Would be curious as to what the rationale for this feature is. Presumably Norton's goal is to be good at protecting clients' machines from undesirable activity. And being good at this does not necessarily require them to be good at mining. Would Norton rather crypto hobbyists mine with them (reputation, legitimacy) than with software & partners with sketchier backgrounds? If so, this does seem like an reasonable, albeit unusual, feature.
Why can't Microsoft just send a popup saying "Defender is the only Antivirus you'll ever need". They do the same for promoting Edge all the time.
Unless you're totally raw-dogging the internet, Windows Defender is all you need.

Stop paying Norton and MacAfee to use your computer without your permission.
