They have been definitely denied initially for their behavior on the flight to Cancun. They we're acting senselessly, no mask, heavy drinking, vaping , not respecting any rules. The staff on the plane had to resort to staying in the back of the place because they we're afraid of their behaviors. Police we're waiting for them when they got back to Montreal.
Since when can you not drink on a plane? I've never really looked if vaping on a plane is against the rules, but it's pretty easy to do that covertly enough anyways
Since the pandemic started you can't drink alcohol on planes, at least in the US (I realize this was happening overseas but I suspect that rule is not just the US). I've heard a flight attendant say it's a $10K fine for drinking on a plane now but I don't have confirmation/sources on that, I just know all US flights include a no alcohol announcement since the start of the pandemic. Vaping is also illegal on planes, having nothing to do with the pandemic, for the same reason as smoking (shared air space).
You are not allowed to bring your own liquor on the plane, plus, they we're drinking a ridiculous amount of alcohol and getting shit face. You aren't allowed to vape neither, like you aren't allowed to dance and have sex. I don't get why people don't see how their behaviors was completely unacceptable. The authorities also think it was unacceptable since they we're all picked up when they landed back.

It wasn't a commercial flight. It was a charted, private flight. What they are or not allowed to do ultimately would come down to the service provider... If the service provider was OK with it, they could actually do all of those things.
Clearly the Canadian Media and Government weren't ok with it. Sunwing only took a position after this story was terrible PR. If this were serious they would have diverted the plane or arrested them at the gate...
Short answer: because people upvote it. Long answer: because it shows the ubiquity and the power of technology in our lives. They were busted because someone had the stupidity of sharing the video on social media. They were blacklisted by other Canadian airlines flying to/from Mexico probably after the flight manifest was shared with them by Sunwing. Also, now this story is probably going to rank higher than any other press about them in Google.
I am not saying what they did is good. In fact all of the Canada, going through the brutal Omicron wave right now, is jumping on the scolding and memefication train. But this is straight up Black Mirror material.
> St-Pierre said she won the free trip in a contest on Instagram and had never previously heard of the organizer, who identifies himself on social media as James William Awad. “I was expecting a relaxing week, where I was going to be careful,” she said. “But this turns out to be an expensive trip for something that was supposed to be free.”
I don't like the idea of an airline stranding people in a foreign country, and I really don't like that the prime minister directly mocked those people, but going on a "free" trip you "won" on instagram organized by someone you have never even heard of is pretty idiotic.
I think you should read more on what happened in the plane going there, they are getting what they deserve. There is a reason the police were waiting for them at the airport when they got back to Montreal!
Yeah Prime Minister Trudeau shouldn't have even commented, it was a private flight, who cares... they weren't wearing masks it's not like they were wearing blackface, oh wait.

If you're going to break a number of laws on a flight, I don't think it's terribly surprising that the same business, or other airlines, might decline to do business with you in the future.
Ultimately, these are private enterprises and you're not entitled to your preferred mode of transportation for a return trip to Canada. It would be a lot more inconvenient to have to bus or rent a car to drive all the way back, but if you're going to break a bunch of laws the consequences may, unsurprisingly, be inconvenient.
That's an awful comparison, 5 people were killed at the capitol riot and caused tens of millions of dollars in damages... This was a nothing-burger of a story until the manufactured outrage machine spun up & the PM chimed in.
One person died violently, an unarmed rioter who was shot by Capitol Police after the force finally decided to do the job they were trained and armed for, after letting 150 idiots cause chaos for far too long.
Four other rioters died of heart attacks and so forth around the time of the riot, not violently.
And before you say "Didn't a bunch of police officers get killed?", no. Officer Sicknick died of a stroke the day after the riot, but he was not hit by a fire extinguisher, or exposed to bear spray. His autopsy specifically checked for and ruled out such causes for the stroke.
Airlines really frustrate me when they behave this way, yet see no problem packing 180 people into an aluminum cylinder, as if that magically makes us all ok. I can't tell if this is just the airlines covering themselves from liability, or a vocal group within the industry demanding it.
They need competitions and lots of lawsuit. This is why people needs to find every opportunities to sue. And also individuals working there. They will only response to money...or in this case lost of it. Anything else doesn't matter.
