Spotify Model for Open Source

Today I watched this excellent video on yet another open source horror story https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d15DP5zqnYE.

It led me to ponder how other ecosystems like Spotify, Youtube, Twitch, and others incentivize creators and create a path towards a sustainable lifestyle.

Why isn't leading a massive project like FFMPEG as lucrative as being a successful Twitch streamer or Youtuber?

I realize this isn't a novel idea, but could a GitHub or equivalent entity solve open source sustainability by providing revenue sharing based on metrics like dependent projects or total downloads?
