I dunno when it happened and precisely why, but at some point before the pandemic every single store I visit (in Ontario) shut off the “are you stealing stuff?” scales and such.
Now I can scan items any which way with or without placing them in the bagging area.
I’m still salty about this becoming my job, though.
No one likes queuing but I don't like being surveilled as deeply as this set up implies, I also have concerns around the assumption you have a smartphone. I personally pay in cash on purpose at supermarkets.
These supermarkets exclude anyone who doesn't have a smartphone or doesn't want to download yet another app.
Questions I have is what happens if you get in then turn your phone off, or take something and put something that weighs the same on the shelf?
