Pickin'em Up the Pawpaws
This is a question for natives of the Southeastern US.
There is a song that used to be popular in the region, involving gathering pawpaws, which are a local relative of custard apple and soursop. It could be sung "Pickin' up the pawpaws, puttin'em in the basket", but it is immediately tempting to move on to "pickin'em up the pawpaws, puttin'em in the basket".
My question is whether this latter form is the way anybody learned the song, or if grammatical discipline overcame the rhythmic temptation.
And, if temptation won, did anyone move on to "P'nickin'em'up the pawpaws, p'nuttin'em in the basket"?
