Ask HN: Software engineer interested in machine learning, what not to do?

I have doing full-stack web development for about 6 years now. I am interested in learning more about machine learning and perhaps at one point switch to working professionally in the field. Any advice from people who followed a similar path? i am especially interested in things to avoid doing.
