I hate to say it, but the US is clearly the provocateur here. There is no real reason that the US needs Ukraine, a state that has historically been part of Russia, in NATO. Having Ukraine in NATO does approximately jack shit to benefit a person like me, a regular peasant in the US.

Imagine if the US lost the cold war and the USSR decided to invite Canada and Mexico into the Warsaw Pact - that's pretty much what is going on here.

The propaganda machine is in full swing at this point, I think the rulers of the US are actively hoping for war. Why else would they be so provocative? If someone has an answer to this I'd love to hear it, but it really seems to me like this is just classic US empire building, disguised under a thick coat of media propaganda and misinformation.

I strongly agree with you. In fact, the article mentions a Assistant Secretary of Defense under Obama calling to prepare for war against Russia.
What you're saying basically amounts to "geopolitical nihilism." Just because something is physically far away doesn't mean that it isn't important or that American influence cannot be justifiable. This is the kind of rhetoric that lead to the pullout from Afghanistan.
Well to be honest, I think it was a great thing that we got out of Afghanistan. If it was up to me, we'd get out of the whole middle east. It doesn't benefit me in the slightest to have troops halfway around the world, killing millions and pissing off entire nations of people.

That's my whole problem with this US Empire - it doesn't actually benefit regular people. It just helps rich execs of defense and oil companies. I think my life would be better off if the US was friends with Russia and nations in the MidEast. There's no reason for me to want enemies.

And moreover, from the geopolitical standpoint, why is it in the US's core interest to have Ukraine in NATO? We control our entire home continent, and the oceans, and multiple other continents, including basically all of Europe. Did we really need this additional country in the alliance? It seems to me we are less safe if Russia is really pissed off at us.

Indeed. I am still amazed about the Cuban missile crisis, which happened only after USA put nuclear ballistic missiles (Jupiter) to Italy and Turkey.
