Much of this work has been driven by Steinberg's bullheaded forcing of VST3 on the industry. No new VST2 licenses can be acquired. VST2 support will be dropped from Cubase/Nuendo. Meanwhile, VST3 is still a mess. Developers hate it. It can't consume MIDI directly. It's needlessly complex and incompatible with VST2 in significant ways requiring extensive workarounds.
As for LV2, it has a serious case of NIH, and an inability to provide the tools plugin developers need because it is "not the LV2 way."
