Programming mistake? He intentionally filled with garbage by hand.
Mistake of judgement sure, programming mistake not so much.
Why should this warrant a ban though? It was his GitHub repo and as far as I know you are allowed to put anything you want in there as long as it's not a breach of copyright, illegal or inappropriate.
Exactly, GitHub repo should be his free speech.
FWIW, it looks like this is about the NPM account, not the GitHub account.
he can use his own hit repository for that. git is distributed.
I think the reasoning is that he betrayed his responsibility as he was a part of the Open Source supply chain, which he started using for other than its advertised purpose.
You should be prepare to bear the consequence before you do something controversial, or you don't do it at the first place, simple as that.
I really wonder, why was he banned from GH? What terms did he actually break? Had he not made the bug blatantly intentional or announcing his actions, would he not be banned now?

I think the intentionality is completely irrelevant. I don't like his childish attitude, but I do find a rather strong satirical point in this new, obviously dishonest, claim of a programming mistake.

How would you know the difference in a future fiasco if the "developer-to-blame" makes a compelling and sincere statemement on how a new backdoor was born from a completely humane error?

I'd heard this ban was liffted; apparently that report wasn't correct?
