I'm a US citizen, completely clean record - but I've had multiple bad experiences at these checkpoints, so I try to avoid them when I'm planning to travel. The fruit inspection stations don't seem to be as bad - they're so busy that they just wave everyone through. Some of the border checkpoints are pretty deserted though, so they have enough time to ask you the standard LEO questions.
