They're also opposed to vaccines, masks, Justin Trudeau(1), and while they don't talk about it, the provincial governments of Quebec and Ontario (amongst others). They're also opposed to the US for also requiring vaccination for truckers headed south.
They're for the United States, the Confederacy, Donald Trump, Maxime Bernier, making things Great Again and desecrating non-political monuments (Unknown Soldier, Terry Fox).
And they really, really hate being inconvenienced. And they have bad timing because it's quite cold now and pretty much everything is closed.
And they really don't give a sh*t about the health or welfare of those they disagree with.
(1) It's worth pointing out that Mr. Trudeau leads a minority government which could be tossed whenever the other parties decide it's time. Pretty weak hold on power from a purported dictator.
^ one can see the sort of attitudes we have to deal with in Canada. We have constitutional protections that should mean we are protected from this, but out government has decided to ignore them.
There is a stronger federal option which the provinces don't want to trigger. And, given the notwithstanding clause uses and/or abuses, vaccination is a small thing compared to language, religion and gender discrimination. And to use the tired cliche, free speech doesn't mean you can yell fire in theatres.
Whether one agrees with that interpretation of Canada's rights depends on how serious a public health threat one feels this pandemic is.
The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such *reasonable* limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.
For a good larf, look up the “MOU” (Memorandum of Understanding) associated with this gong show.
If you want to be upset, look up the backgrounds of the organizers and coordinators.
It’s not surprising that people are upset about the uneven handling of this pandemic. But one should not rally behind those organizers.
The pandemic is obviously drawing to a close: increasing numbers of densely populated cities are no longer in crisis. Seems likely that it’ll be only a few more weeks until a great many restrictions are lifted. I guess now’s the time to protest, before there’s no need for it any more.
The upside is that Canada has has a great vaccine uptake.
I think winters up here (at least, used to) forge our bonds: surviving the old Canadian Winters required cooperation and support. You shovel the old senior neighbour’s driveway, the pregnant mom’s driveway, pull over to help a breakdown, hold the door open, apologize when you’ve been inconsiderate, queue up, greet a passing familiar face. You get your vaccine because it’s better for everyone when you do.
It’s a real shame that those particular organizers made out like bandits.
