Anthony Bourdains trip to The south, he met up with a vibrant Desi-American community who swore blind caste meant nothing in the USA these days. I am less sure, but hope so.
In Australia a south- Asia colleague is fighting the burden of eldest son == "find the suitable bride for your nephews and nieces" and assures me he can't take any old photo back to momma. I suspect colour/shade is a proxy for some people.
