When buying a house people consider how much the monthly rent is. They don’t care how much interest they pay over the life of the loan. Everyone (except those off the grid so to speak) pays a monthly rate to live in a dwelling. The mindset of buyers is to buy a place with an affordable monthly payment and hope that in x years they can sell the house for a profit or live long enough in the house so that their monthly payment is much cheaper than renting a place.
