I think the “obsession” was in reference to the many posts about either optimizing strategy, or other games taking inspiration and creating similar but slightly different variants.
As for why, I’d say it’s the simple case of something got popular, and people are copying and analyzing it. It’s a fad, like so many others before it.
I think everyone needs to relax about wordle. This is cementing in my mind the human shameness of copying things (copy cat culture). Drop it. It’s a bad habit and I hate seeing it. It’s why we have 30 saas apps that do nothing. Stop it.
Sameness is an existentialist crisis, so please explore it in that realm instead of the abstraction of copying.
2048 went through a phase also. Everyone and their dog[0] was making a clone. The fad will die out in a few months and everyone will move onto the next one.
I don't see why shared enjoyment of something is a "shameness". People are coming together to enjoy and share about something they have in common and that should be a good thing.
It's a popular little game that turns out to have a few interesting aspects or dimensions to it that people are now exploring. I would view it as perfectly normal and interesting HN content that will taper off when a new fad takes its place.
