Ask HN: How do you get a hacked Instagram account back?

A friend did not have 2FA on his Instagram account and it’s been hacked and taken over by somebody hawking bitcoin.

He’s tried going through Facebook’s help centre to get back control of the account, but hasn’t been able to speak to anybody to move the case forward.

Any advice on what he can do to regain control of his account? Thanks!

File a police report in your local jurisdiction. If you’re in the US, file a report with the FBI regarding a violation of the CFAA (computer fraud and abuse act). Take the results of that to Meta. You want to demonstrate you’ve established a paper trail documenting the unauthorized access of your friend’s account.
