Organization that pumps out numerous videos about how adblockers are “technically” pirating is caught partaking in real software piracy.

do you see anything about this being for personal use only?

"License: Freeware"

Running OCCT5.5.1.exe at no point in time informs you about limited license. There are no popups, no banners. Clicking 'About OCCT' lets you know this is a "Freeware edition". Thats it, no more info about anything anywhere else. OCCT5.5.1.exe is a single file executable, doesnt seem to unpack itself anywhere, leaves no license files on the disk.

The only indication before Reddit thread was a single tweet from an otaku anime avatar profile without further context https://twitter.com/AerynOsu/status/1488929439249584138

Lets crucify Linus for using "Freeware edition" because program developer has hyper anxiety to even put a small banner into his program or sent a proper email.

That's disingenuous, TechSpot is not the project's official website.

If you go to their website, you can clearly see that commercial use requires a Professional license: https://www.ocbase.com/purchase

Is downloading from techspot illegal now? Is using Freeware software morally bad? Version uploaded to Techspot was listed as Freeware and identifying itself as Freeware, how much more Freeware do you need it to be?
Downloading from techspot is certainly not illegal, but it's your obligation to ensure that you're complying with the project's license.

"Freeware" is not a license, at best it's a category similar to "Open source". MIT and GPL are licenses with clearly defined and understood terms.

Just like "Open source" only implies that source code is accessible, "Freeware" only implies that you don't have to pay for the software. It doesn't automatically grant you a right to use, modify, and redistribute it without restrictions.
