Ask HN: Why do I have to use two sliders (system+app) to adjust volume in 2022?

Do you really have to? I wonder if there are workarounds.

It's nice though if things aren't the same loudness. You can also now listen to multiple apps at the same time with Audio Focus. Pretty amazing.

On modern Windows, the system has a volume, and then each app also has a slider in the mixer settings.

Most programs, for example Spotify, then provide another slider on top of that.

A notable outlier is foobar2000. When you change the volume slider in the app, it actually changes it's mixer volume.

Spotify changes its mixer volume too, at least on Linux
You don't. You can just leave one at 100% (or whatever max you like) and always adjust the other.

But having 2 sliders lets you change the volume per app too, not just having a global system volume, which is nice if you want to hear Norwegian Metal at full blast, but don't like to be interrupted by BS system notifications at the same volume, and so on...

Ironically, I get annoyed because my Macbook Air treats my LG monitor as a TV and doesn’t allow me to adjust the volume.
