Any guesses as to why there is strong seasonality in searches for "USSR", "Soviet", and "Cold War"?

Often these seasonal patterns match up with yearly high school or college entrance exams, and are due to students studying the topics.

Interesting. That would make sense. They drop off sharply every June, when summer break begins. Thanks for the input!
