I've noticed a trend with Apple marketing to opt for Memojis over people whenever possible. As an Android user, I'm curious if Apple's users like them as much as Apple.
My main devices aren't Apple products, but I've always found them a little... tacky? Besides their overtly commercial look-and-feel, when combined with their face tracking technology it adds a really uncanny sense of movement to them that's always made me a bit uncomfortable. It reminds me of Snapchat's Bitmoji efforts, which felt similarly strange. To each their own, I suppose.
I don't care for them at all. They seem both fake and also very limited in their range of expression of facial types, facial colors, hair styles and colors, colors and styles of simple things like glasses, and so many other things. Everywhere that they should have a whole continuum of colors or shapes and styles, they have less than a handful of specific examples.
I'm an old, fat, white guy, and even I can't get one that really looks anything at all like me. And I've seen multiple examples of Memojis that are supposed to be of specific people, but are in fact identical. And yet the people from whom they are supposedly created to represent don't really look that much alike.
There are other personal avatar creation systems that are better. I hope that there are some out there that are much better. Because Memojis suck.
