I can't imagine working at a place that had 1000+ staff. I'd be a number, a cog.

Good follow up.. Why wouldn't you want to work at a FAANG..

- 1. I'd be a number

- 2. I don't believe any of them have a mission.

- 3. I think the hiring tests are really silly.

- 4. FAANG's burn their staff out.

- 5. The Perks don't mean much to me.

Could we stop conflating these companies? Personally I wouldn't work for FB, but I would like to work for Apple. The others fall between those two extremes.

FB has created Reason, React.js, GraphQL, PyTorch, and so on.

Apple is like jewellery to rich people.

This is how I see it.

I have friends in FB, and I hear that it is an extremely good place to work.

I will never seek a job at Apple or Amazon.

I will consider options in Netflix, Microsoft, FB, and Google, though.

There is more to it than the libraries both companies create. FB has facilitated various societal issues (surveillance advertising, conspiracy theory spreading/radicalization, depression in younger users, etc.), but Apple for the most part just builds products people enjoy.

To some (most?) the software projects produced are a secondary consideration.

Apple directly enables surveillance in totalitarian states while patting themselves on the back as privacy champions in the US.

For me, in this order:

1. Being able to work in interesting tech.

2. Good pay.

3. Job is stable if performance is good.

4. Being able to work with smart people.

I didn't. I kinda stumbled into it.

So far, this team looks to be really good, and I'm happy to be working with them.

But I'm very suspicious of the company overall, and I'm definitely keeping an eye out for the various negative behaviours that I've seen them accused of regarding their employees.

We will see how it goes. If this doesn't work out long term, I hope this means I'll be in a better position to get a different job at a different employer down the line.

Only time will tell.
