Ask HN: Whatever Became of Freedows 98?

Freedows was supposed to be an open source alternative to Windows 98. It was in development a long time and then vanished. Any idea what happened to it?

I don't remember it. It sounds like Lindows. A paid Linux distrobution that was promising windows compatibility through Wine.

Lindows got sued by Microsoft and renamed Linspire, and never offered much more that the ability to run a few popular Wine compatible apps.

It was free software. After the DOJ ruling they wanted to make an alternative to Windows, but when the DOJ dropped the charges, development was stalled and money dried up.
