The problem with Ethereum comes down to its very definition. The fact that it's programable makes it insecure. Bitcoin on the other hand is constantly being harden to increase its security which makes it extremely secure and attractive to investors.
Both will survive and continue to be useful. It comes down to what problem they need to solve. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.
Yes, you can build application directly with Ethereum. But, with Bitcoin, there will be many businesses built around it so one will not be better than the other.
