Hard work as a virtue made as much sense as bearing as many children as possible when life was poorer and much less certain. An indefinite amount of labor was needed to survive on a farm or frontier.
Now, that habit is unnecessary
for many people. Except, competetive pressures still exist if you are attuned to them, and some amount of work is necessary to produce enough to compensate for your production.
What’s the right amount? Consider religious observation. Some religions welcome complete devotion to the religious cause, except that everyone spending all day praising and paying results in no crops raised or fish caught, and everyone dies. Seems similar.
