I thought this was intentional so it is t left plugged in when using.
Agreed. It's intentional so you don't leave the cord in.

It only takes a minute to charge it enough to use. The Verge are being kinda prissy

I actually think this is a very good design decision. So you dont use it when it is plugged in.

I still have problem with its flatness though. Somehow people who like it being flat are also the ones who love butterfly keyboard. And I intensely dislike both.

... What's wrong with using something while it's plugged in?
The lightning port just isn't designed for this usage, and but not allowing to be used this way you save a lot of support issues.
No? What about using iPhones while they are plugged in? What makes the design not suitable for that? (If the port was on the edge)
Where is the Qi wireless charging mouse and mouse pad from Apple; mouse always charged.
They'd probably have to license some patents from others who already accomplished a similar system, ie: Logitech PowerPlay.
It's 2022 and people who have never used a magic mouse still think this is an issue.

I have to charge my mouse quarterly.

I flip it over, plug it in and take the dog for a walk. By the time I'm back it's good to go for another couple months.

Brilliant design. A forcing function to take a break; even tho it's only ~4 times per year it's better than changing batteries every 2 weeks.
Everyone in the comments atm seems to be praising Apple for being smarter than their users and claiming this is a feature, not a bug. Here's why that's insane:

1. Any charging circuit designed by someone who knows what they're doing won't mind being plugged in for hours while in use

2. There are many situations where you can't afford to flip over your mouse and leave for half an hour. Ever had your battery die in the middle of a live video production? Or during an important meeting? Yes, you should have charged beforehand, but people make mistakes and the better products (i.e. every other mouse on the market) will "fail safe" and let you recover from your mistake, not punish you for screwing up.

3. Batteries degrade and having the option to use the mouse wired once that happens means less e-waste. Of course that's not in Apple's best interest...

Every other company has figured this out. Apple isn't being innovative, they're being stubborn. Their whole brand identity hinges on being different and never seen as following industry trends, even if that means a worse product.

"Magic Mouse lays on its back, its belly baking in the hot sun, beating its legs, trying to turn itself over but it can't, not without your help. But you're not helping."
