Ask HN: Non-IT] how do you call the wind in your language?

I am italian, and we have tramontana, grecale, levante, scirocco, mezzogiorno, libeccio, ponente and maestrale... depending from where they come from, the order I listed is from north to north west relative to Mar Ionio as we do it in Italy, but was wondering, how do other countries name their winds? and according to what?

Αερας in Greek, hence the English word Air.
The name of the winds in Italy were decided by Greeks that is why the direction they come from have the name according to where they come from mar ionio, so i Guess in Greek each one has the same name of Italian language but in greek
To be precise, coming from mar ionio we have a different name for each wind according from the source direction

The one from North, where there are mountains is called Tramontana (after the mountain, north, where are are the mountains of alps)

The one from north east, Grecale, the one from Greece, that is North east from Mar Ionio

The one from East, is levante, where the sun leaves at dawn

The one from South East, is Scirocco, because it comes from Syria at South East of Mar Ionio

The one from South is Mezzogiorno, as it is direct to South

The one from South West is Libeccio, as it comes from the position of Lybia to Mar Ionio

The one from West is Ponente, as it is where the sun comes from at sunrise

The one from North West is Maestrale (but I haven't understood yet where the names comes from)

you don't have that different names for winds according to where they come from?
