Last year I was inspired by this Graeber article to write this:

Absolutely nobody has fun in higher education now. Never! I used to set up codebreaking escape-room style puzzles. We went on field trips. We cracked the WEP wifi. We played with drones and robots. We'd get in crazy. leftfield guest lecturers. Today, a suffocating, disabling, illiberal safety and surveillance culture puts a stop to anything that even resembles "fun".

But "fun" (memorable experiences) is what creates memory engrams, so a culture of misery is particularly damaging to teaching ad learning.
