Ask HN: Google using YouTube as 2FA even though I’m signed out

Recently my google account defaults to showing a prompt in YouTube that I have to accept. I am signed out within the YouTube app itself and no matter how many times I use authenticator code instead, it always defaults to YouTube.

Is this some new dark pattern I can’t get rid of? If so, this is by far the most annoying thing ever. Is there a way to complete remove Google from my life? (Although I use SSO for so many things)

So when you log in to your Google account, after you enter your username and password, it makes you go to YouTube as your second authentication factor?

Yes, it’s a “google prompt” and is the default method of 2FA. With no way for me to adjust it in settings. I’d assume it uses any Google apps you have on your phone but YT is the only one I have.

Can’t you uninstall (or disable) the YouTube application?
