I have just been through both processes for two of my children. I can definitely say that applying to a private high school in San Francisco is 3x as stressful.
I have some tips. If you are applying from a public middle school and have not been through the process before, you are at a big disadvantage. The number 1 tip is to start early, middle to end of 7th grade.
