An oberlin student used a fake ID to buy wine, then shoplifted.
Son of owner caught them.
Oberlin then called the store "racist".
Oberlin administrators handed out flyers and stacks of flyers to students (including dean of students).
Another college admin said. "I hope we rain fire and brimstone on that store".
A professor objected to oberlins approach
Admin says "F-him. I'd say unleash the students..."
Then oberlin worked with suppliers to block them from buying from bakery.
From a peek at Wikipedia, the $50M judgement (per WSJ subtitle) would be ~$18,000 per student for Oberlin College, or ~5% of their total endowment. (Other sources say the $50M will be cut down to ~$33M by an Ohio tort reform law.)
The WSJ obviously has some bias on this...but at some point Oberlin's loose-canon performative activism may start cross-fading into institutional self-immolation.
