Things are flagged because people flagged them. Sometimes it's because people don't agree with them, sometimes it's because they don't think it's appropriate for HN.

Flagging is not just, or even primarily for, offensive content. It's for stuff that's off-topic for HN in the judgement of the flaggers. For example, celebrity gossip is usually flagged. So are duplicate stories, or posts that essentially just kick of a tired debate, like a story about vim > emacs.
