The reports coming out of UA this weekend are utterly horrific:

> "Dead civilians are seen near a highway 20 km outside of Kyiv. Under the blanket are 4-5 dead naked women whom the barbarians tried to burn right there on the side of the road." -- https://twitter.com/DefenceU/status/1510333131320090633

> "My husband's friend, a doctor from Zaporizhzhia, says a group of girls from Mariupol was admitted to their hospital. The oldest one is 10 years old. They have recto-vaginal tears." -- https://twitter.com/olya_rudenko/status/1510304622816251909

"Almost 300 buried in mass grave in Bucha, near Kyiv:" -- https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/4/2/almost-300-buried-in...

"New Srebrenica. The Ukrainian city of Bucha was in the hands of animals for several weeks. Local civillians were being executed arbitrarily, some with hands tied behind their backs, their bodies scattered in the streets of the city." -- https://twitter.com/DefenceU/status/1510372750665433089

> "As in Syria, in Ukraine - e.g. Bucha, Irpin - Russian forces & allies are planting mines in areas under their control, including residential areas. Bodies are also used as booby traps. Unlike Ukraine, Russia is not a signatory to the 2018 Mine Ban Treaty." -- https://twitter.com/ruslantrad/status/1510388667143106575

It's not really selling the whole let's compromise with Putin thing.
it doesn't no. the horrors that have been coming out this weekend hopefully make our "political elite" realize that sanctions alone aren't gonna cut it.

It is sad justice will never be served for this.
The total destruction of the invading nation's remnant international political and economic status combined with a brain drain and the further isolation of its allies is quite a heavy price to pay. The culprits' own families will curse them when, in 20 years, we check back in to see how Russia's (not) doing. That said, don't hate on ordinary Russians. They had no control of their government for a long time.
Russia has been preparing for this for a decade! They are more hardened than you think. The more sanctions, the more desperate and extreme measures taken, and more innocent loss of life. I do not see a way out of this conflict other than WW3.
Corrupt kleptocrats preparing for their country having to do everything by itself, after being cut off from the world. Yeah, I don't believe that they succeeded.

Soon, they'll barely be able to manufacfture tractors, once Czechia stops selling them tractor kits. :D

Look here and see how many of these don't depend on foreign tech or knowledge: https://russian-farmland.com/tractor-made-in-russia.html

Russia's ability to fight a WW3 is being steadily eroded.

Long term, the writing was on the wall before this: inverting population pyramid and declining population, rampant corruption, lack of significant industry beyond petroleum (which is becoming less relevant), diplomatic marginalization, rotting military. This was a last ditch play to try and restore Russian relevance.

And the conflict has just directly exacerbated this: killed a bunch of Russian youth, destroyed a bunch of military materiel, brought in sanctions that hamper the economy's ability to fund their military over the long run. And it's encouraged Western Europe to invest in military and pay the significant costs necessary for energy independence.

They don't control the government but they love it, and, frankly, russians also love that they don't have the control cause then they don't have to bear any responsibility for anything.

> combined with a brain drain

Take heart, my bereaved; know that all the potential Russian FAANG hackers are in the EU and the US now.

I feel like the punishment for murder and child rape should be higher than being cursed by your family.

Hopefully as a minimum Ukraine prosecutes and charges each and every captured Russian soldier when this is over. As a minimum they are guilty of partaking in a war of aggression.

Justice means sending Ukraine all the equipment it needs, handing Ukraine all the frozen assets of the Russian Central Bank, stopping all russian imports and banning travel to Russia, banning sending any medicine for as long as the war criminal Putin is in power and for as.long as those who commoted those attrocities are not held on trial.
Never say never. Some perpetrators of these crimes are likely dead already.

And who knows what the future holds, maybe those frozen foreign reserves may not be comming back to Russia's central bankers, but will instead go to reparations and compensation to victims.

The reserve and the frozen assets should be returned if and only if the Russian People send Putin and his hunta to the ICJ.

The reparation part sound nice too though

What evidence do you have to support this?
Don't trust, look at the evidence.

For example, here are executed civilians with hands tied behind their back - https://twitter.com/MacaesBruno/status/1510341389405589505

The only thing this is evidence is of is a picture existing of people who appear to be dead, the rest is conjecture. Trusting biased ground sources leads to people believing fake propaganda like Snake Island or the Ghost of Kyiv, manufactured by Ukraine.

Given we know Ukraine has been executing and torturing POWs (they bragged about it), it could easily be a false flag or more POW torture.

What does "Snake Island" or the "Ghost of Kyiv" have to do with these photos? First being a false claim of casualties, and the second some boasting.

> it could easily be a false flag or more POW torture.

What exactly could easily be a false flag? I'm pretty sure sending Ukrainian soldiers to kill Ukrainian civilians by hundreds would be a PR disaster, if they would even comply.

These can be simply mass graves dug by residents of Bucha weeks before (and perhaps since then): https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-60729206

If you truly want to suspend judgement, maybe don't make any yourself.

what if the civilians were russian sympathisers? those don't seem to be getting much love in Ukraine recently.

with regards to snake island or ghost of kiev, I think the point that was trying to be made was stop believing shit you see on twitter and thinking you need to have an opinion about it. it's tiresome, no one cares, people have gone from being infectious disease experts to experts on eastern european affairs overnight.

A lot of what if's these days... what if he's a Russian and wants to throw around doubts to support his country's war effort. (I can make my own what ifs without any factual basis, too :))

My point is, who cares about what ifs that don't have any factual support (yet or ever).

> I think the point that was trying to be made was stop believing shit you see on twitter and thinking you need to have an opinion about it

and instead take the word of a HN throwaway account, who even after all this, still wants a "listen to both sides" debate? gotcha.

I know people who say Srebrenica was "overrated" and didn't happen the way it is now in the history books because both sides were bad. Saying it's fake jut because you aren't there can have many causes:

a) self preservation by refusing not to deal with reality,

b) rooting for the other side,

c) having a deep hate for all humanity (Ted Kaczinsky types),

d) cult like religious believes (Qanon), e) a need to appear 100% fact driven (but taking it so far that one refuses to look at facts/truth when presented with them).

oh yeah terrible, listen to both sides and form your own opinion, how terrible. I'm surprised you didn't invoke Godwins law.
Yeah, sure, maybe it is Ukraine came to Russian land with full scale war? Come in, see it for yourself. I love this thought - "we won't go to Ukraine to see it on our own eyes, but Ukrainians are fake". I've been in Kyiv when russian bombing started, I survived, rescued my sister and girlfriend from this hell. You can say that I'm a fake, like many do, but I just wish you to live through the same
in a sibling comment they're openly rooting for the killing of UA civilians. account created 23 days ago and their comments are just the usual MAGA-hat Putin bidding drivel.
This is how the Russian "liberation" always looked like. Gang rapes, murder and wanton destruction and plunder.

https://warfarehistorynetwork.com/2018/12/23/wretched-miscon...

It should not be a surprise this did not change, when the whole nation is lead by a guy who still unquestioningly glorifies the sacrifice of the Red Army in WWII.

It's probably a policy by now, just to keep the morale at least somewhat above 0.

Ever heard about 40,000 plastic bags ordered by russian army or mobile crematoriums at the border between Ukraine and Belarus prepared by russians? They weren’t for their soldiers, they were for us, Ukrainians. Just think about it for a second. Mobile crematoriums for mass executions of civilian population in 2022. The military help we desperately need is not about some geopolitical play or pushing one’s agenda. No. It is about stopping the inhuman tragedy of holocaust that is reoccurring before your very eyes. Naturally, if you are a resident of US or EU, I ask you to contact your government representatives and pressure them to do right. Additionally, if you are a resident of Hungary, it is important that you demand your government to stop blocking military and humanitarian aid from being delivered to Ukraine through your territory.
I've read a while back than France24 reported this:

"British website The Telegraph is reporting that Russia is using mobile crematoriums in Ukraine in bid to hide its losses. But the accompanying video footage of a crematorium actually dates from 2013. It was posted by a Russian incinerator construction company and is not footage from the ground. The use of mobile crematoriums by Russians during the current war in Ukraine is yet to be verified. We tell you more in this edition. "

https://www.france24.com/en/tv-shows/truth-or-fake/20220228-...

This hasn't been updated for a month, still market as "unverified".

Same on Snopes, "unproven": https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/russia-mobile-crematoriums...

I don't see anything about mobile crematoriums in the tweets linked, was the tweet taken down or something?

While for the reasons unknown you may sympathize with indefensible, I implore you to look into this document https://docs.cntd.ru/document/727930017?marker=64S0IJ it approves the application of an actual, no it's not a joke, government standard of mass burials during both peacetime and war. The referenced standard describes in detail how mass burials must be conducted. Why is it important? russia may be at this point a non-human regime but it is still a bureaucracy that follows certain procedures. Therefore, no matter how inhuman of an act something is, it has a high chance to be documented and declared as a procedure. This document is discussed in the twitter thread alongside other references.
There is a lot of conjecture in that thread. Assuming the materials describing procedure for mass burials are true, he immediately jumps to the conclusion that the Russians planned for a quick victory followed by genocide.
I hope one day you will forgive us in the West, for not doing enough to support you.. while you fight our war.

Slava Ukraine. Slava Heroime.

> while you fight our war.

If this is indeed a proxy war then you are not supposed to admit it.
