I'd recommend anyone interested in visiting Stonehenge to also make a stop at Avebury - there are many more stones there that you can walk around and touch (without getting into trouble!)
Also, Newgrange in Ireland is fantastically interesting. Burial mound (probably) whose chamber is illuminated by the rising sun each year around December 21.
This is a nice report regarding new locations for the bluestones, but I was hoping it'd be talking about the "story" of Stonehenge. Modern archaeology and anthropological theory has transformed our understanding of Stonehenge, its purpose, and its relationship to nearby monuments, notably Woodhenge and the Durrington Walls.
The whole area is filled with amazing neolithic monuments and structures, and benefits greatly from a personalized guide. Be well prepared up-front. We picked Laurence Davies (https://oldburytours.co.uk/), who was excellent.
When considering how much imagery is being digitised, these Eureka moments will become a thing of the past as some computer program, probably Google, starts matching and identifying samples of stuff dispersed far and wide in collections around the world over the decades.
Its not the first time, I've heard of suggestions that some of the rocks might have come from Wales. This transportation might also shed light or contribute reinforcement on the general consensus of how the pyramids were built. Then the question of spontaneous insight or some travelling and imparting of knowledge may ensue.
