__What is this?__

Former President Obama speaking on regulatory approaches to social media companies. Lasts for an hour from the 2 hour mark (should already start there).

__Why did I post this here?__

I wanted to spur educated discussion (typically absent on YouTube). There's strong overlap between HN users and those who have worked at (or interacted with workers of) the very tech companies Obama criticizes. I'm interested in hearing their commentary, especially with regard to section 230.

__What are my thoughts?__

Copied verbatim from my comment:

Obama's regulatory views on social media are already outmoded. In response to deplatforming on conventional social media sites, "alt-tech" companies have arisen. Catering to those who were censured, these companies are thriving. Certainly these alt-tech companies won't abide by some code of conduct? Ditto for international companies like TikTok.

I'm also concerned by the comment that social media algorithms are needed to better develop a regulatory approach. Given that the government undoubtedly has the ability to scrape social media data, why is it that government employees cannot interpret this data? Why must they rely on disclosures by private companies? The core question that needs to be answered here is "how can government entice more highly-skilled programmers to work for them, not social media conglomerates?"
