Hi HN,

OSS Database is a crowdsourced database of Open Source alternatives to popular software. I am building this database so people can search and filter open-source alternatives easily. Do let me know what you think.

Built using: - Rails - Postgres - Redis - StimulusJS

Right on! I work with the same stack! Nice product btw!
First impression is the lack of OSS business apps.

For example --- payroll. Every business with employees needs this. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

No way most businesses could survive with just Open Source.

Congratulations on the Show HN! You may want to pre-seed your site with the existing listings from AlternativeTo.net, e.g. https://alternativeto.net/software/quicken/?license=opensour... since there's a network effect one needs to overcome in order to start getting contributions
Thanks! Yes, that is the plan. I have put together a list of OSS alternatives lists on Github. I will start seeding the database to get the network effects going.
This looks super useful!

One suggestion - it might be nice to weight projects with recent commits highly -- some of the projects listed haven't seen any activity in a while. A lack of recent activity is not always associated with issues, but it can be.

Thanks!

That is a good idea, I could create a metric from recent commits, releases, open issues, open PRs. I will also add these details to each projects own page.

I was hoping to find anything good enough to replace Jira, but no results :(
