Ask HN: Ideas to Use M1s Power

Work is buying me a top of the line 16” M1 MacBook Pro. What are some cool ideas for using all that power for fun? I do all my dev work via SSH, so it’s overkill for work.

I'm in a similar boat; while not as powerful as the new Macs, on a whim I recently bought a ThinkPad Ryzen 5 (one with 6 cores) with 24 gigs of memory. Running Linux. (To be fair my existing personal laptop was 8 years old and I was getting bored with it).

I don't know what to do to take full advantage of it.

The things I normally do on a personal machine can be done with a Raspberry Pi.

Years ago I used to contribute to Linux, Firefox etc (nothing substantial). I'm not sure if I want to go back to that.

For Firefox Mobile (Android), there are infact minor bugs that I face, but the patches for that submitted by other community members haven't been looked into for over a year [1] and this is not the only patch like this, so I'm not sure if I should even bother. I understand they're probably busy and/or overworked and/or have higher priority things to work on.

So I'm looking for suggestions to take advantage of my laptop.

your work laptop is not your personal laptop.

then again, maybe you can learn native apple development. and contribute something back to work? try multi-gigabytes xcode, iOS simulators, swift, metal, and so on. your m1 resources will deplete fast.

Also anything OP might use/develop on it can open him up to licensing and liability issue right?
This is for fun, not profit. Also, I can do whatever I want with it, within reason.
Use M1 to build arm64 images that is suitable for both M1 and Ampera Altra
My friend in December 2013, asked me, what I knew about AI.

He wanted to create AI, which will predict, what will happen with Ukraine in next years.

But you could try to predict future of your country or your city :)
