I liked the way the word shokunin was described by a sushi making shokunin here - https://youtu.be/8R02NE050Jk (2:29). I feel this is a much simpler explanation than the one in OP.
News: such lone dedicated craftsmen and their acolytes have existed everywhere in the world.
Some struggle on without much appreciation, some are dead, and some were killed for 'progress'. Japan's craftsmen too are a dying breed after 150y of Meiji-Industrial revolution.
It's nice that they're trying to keep the crafts/traditions alive, but there's nothing unique about them. The old-world hangs on by a thin thread, waiting for its misery to end, while the plebs clap on and cheer.
