A little ironic as until relatively recently American Midwestern political culture was the most strongly civic and, arguably, communitarian, in the United States. But coastal liberal culture has come to dominate the political left, southern conservative culture the political right, and the factionalization of the Midwest along those political contours has been well underway for at least a couple of decades, now. :(
I agree. A communist system would also be far more equal in regards to public education. California punished the poor children and rewarded the rich children able to supplement with tutors or switch to private education during the pandemic. The governor's children even go to private school! California does not even require school bus service.
Florida, on the other hand, has had far more equal access to in-person education the past two years.
Remote work means people can maximize their wages else where.
A lot of people also don't know what it's like to live / grow up in a small town. I suspect once they meet middle American culture they'll be coming right back to California.
Also, I don't know how I'd be able to hack living in Los Angeles in my 20's in the current era. Right now I'm a mid-career engineer making mid career wages. I don't live big, but I'm looking at other countries to buy property in -- simply because I can't afford anything out here.
California needs to build a heroic amount of housing as quickly as possible.
No, Cali needs to realize unlimited resources first. My local reservoir is below summer level before summer is even here. Why we need to encourage more people to to turn this into a desert?
Lots of people only lived in big cities for employment and many of us are enjoying leaving the noise, pollution, crime, and yes, needles and feces encrusting the sidewalks behind. Sure I’ll miss the hustle and bustle of the city, my brick wall efficiency in a converted warehouse, and the fact that there are 11 Starbucks shops within a 2 block radius. But it’s worth the trade off even if I have a dramatically smaller selection of craft IPAs to choose from.
There are tons of other cities that are much cheaper than cali cities, a lot of people are moving to places like phoenix and Dallas, which have everything cali cities have except maybe nice weather and nature
Since you're on Hacker News, I have to assume the "we" is "successful tech people".
So who's the "the people leaving"? Blue collar workers? Poor people? Anyone who wants a house and isn't a millionaire? Conservatives? Personally, I'd imagine that it's all of the above. (Full disclosure, I left 10 years ago and did fit one of those categories.)
Thanks for leaving, we need the water ... and, im not whom youre replying to, but people leave because they want something else and its worth it to them. More power to 'em, and yourself.
edit cuz i got downvoted for speaking truth. thanks for leaving
not for long ... you gotta squat for years to make it worth it. people keep talking like there is a bunch of empty rich people houses around in cali. I can assure you its just us assholes trying to get by like everywhere else.
