Higher quality means different things to different people though. For one group that loves really classy metaphorical big-picture, slow-burn thrillers, the workaday Virgin River drama is like listening to off-key elevator music. But for Virgin River people, who really live in the workaday fantasy realm, Virgin River is an addiction, if not life itself.

I'd also wonder if part of Netflix's goal is making stuff that's high-enough quality to fit some part of a bell curve. This would mean making a lot of what amounts to low-quality content, to considerable portions of the Netflix audience.

Upping the quality level could then essentially shift the area where Netflix fits the curve, and cause the outflow of a lot of subscribers who perceive that they are paying for more quality than they want or need.

This could imply that your being here and asking this is just part of the way it works, given where you fall on some perceived-quality histogram, if there is such a thing.

I believe in the long tail, but I am unsure if it can be catered for by a company like Netflix. Youtube serves it well, but imagine if Netflix produced a drama about systemd? Would you not watch it? I would.
You cannot just spend your way into making higher quality artistic output. You can spend money to get from a $100,000 60-second commercial to a ~$1,000,000 60-second commercial and the difference in output will be immediately visible. But there's no way to achieve the highest levels of artistic achievement just by pumping more money in. It's like finding a jingle writer and telling him you'll give him a billion dollars to write a Beatles-quality album. He just won't be able to.
I'm not sure if this premise is true. At the Emmy's last year they won for The Crown and The Queen's Gambit. Were obviously nominated in plenty of other categories.

I generally prefer HBO Max in that if a new show comes out there is a much higher chance it is something I'll like - though Netflix makes so much more it's probably about even in quantity of shows I like.

My guess is making shows is very expensive and a gamble! Plenty of projects that look good on paper get panned. Plenty of shows that are considered "crap" probably get a huge amount of views against their cost. I still think this is a semi-overlooked problem to have such a large brand, but ultimately tough position to be in.

I don't think award shows mean much anymore. To win these awards you're generally producing "Oscar-bait" and lobbying people in Hollywood as opposed to making something regular people want to watch. Content that wins awards are more likely to have been popular, but the causation is in the wrong direction. The only thing I could tell you about recent award winners is one of physically assaulted a comedian on stage. And I suspect that whole incident was planned just to get people to pay attention.

It's subjective to say Netflix hasn't had any must-watch content since Stranger Things, but I think their falling subscribers proves the point. In my mind there used to always be a few shows, and a solid collection of classics, that made cutting the subscription a tough sell, but now I have no reason to even consider re-resubscribing.

I don't have a path that I think Netflix should take to improve, and I'm certainly not qualified to be making those decisions. But they're doing something wrong in their current strategy, clearly.

Most media productions -- almost all -- are not profitable. They don't attract enough viewers to make back their production costs. A few productions are immensely popular and make back many times their production costs.

It's not possible to predict in advance what media will become popular with consumers (and thus profitable.)

Moreover, popularity/profitability does not correlate with production quality at medium and high quality levels. (That is, bad production quality rarely becomes popular. Medium and high quality may or may not become popular, and becoming popular is uncorrelated with production quality.)

Since a) most productions are unprofitable; b) you can't predict which ones will be popular; and c) as long as you're at "medium quality" or above, adding more quality does not improve your chances of being profitable, the optimal strategy for content at scale is to invest in making as many medium-quality productions as possible. The risk involved in making a few high quality productions is much greater.

But won't subscribers be annoyed with having to look through so much content to find something they like?
Yes, a bit. Then they'll eventually be happy when they find something they do like. The recommendation algorithms help.

If it was only a few high quality productions, the chances a consumer ever finds something they like at all is much lower.

Watching what got good reviews. It worked for movies for some one hundred years.
There were A LOT fewer movies/shows each year to consume. We had 3rd parties doing reviews of the movies both in print and television. There were no centrally controlled entities telling you what was popular near you as a recommendation. Also it was not uncommon to just "go to the movies" and then ask the clerk what they recommended, this was how I ended up seeing several great films.
Does netflix allow reviews? I'm a big user of reviews, both good and bad, but some of these platforms have stopped showing reviews so it makes it really hard to evaluate if something might be worth watching.

I don't not watch because a bad review necessarily because I look to see if the complaint is about something I care a lot about

Finding reviews is easy even when the service is not collaborative.

I went to the Netflix home page. They don't list any of their content there. False start.

I googled Netflix series. The first item Google lists in Popular shows on Netflix is All of Us Are Dead. I tap on the picture. It's 7.6 on IMDB and 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. I tap the latter and get about 30 reviews from critics and audience and the synopsis of the episodes. I know it's a series about zombies. I can choose to read the reviews now.

I think Netflix killed themselves with the focus group. Mostly mediocrity designed to appeal to a large audience, but satisfying no one.

And don't get me started on the "normalisation" of groups X Y and Z, or the diverse stuff.

Sense8 is a decent example. Had everything including out-of-body mind linked group orgies with every available sexual orientation. Lol! And it was entertaining,

But guess what? Wasn't really that great. Haven't bothered watching season 2 or 3 and probably won't.

There are a few reasons, I think they are trying to expand their catalog as fast as possible so they approved some very iffy content. They were quick to say yes as long as they think someone will view it.

I attended a preview of a NETFLIX movie similar to Braveheart. It was ok but it was no where near the quality of Braveheart. I think that speaks to the fact that they are just trying to build up content without attention to quality.

Also, the way they measure success is by the number of viewers. That indicates that you have to produce content that reverts to the mean. Rarely is that the best quality. And, the dropping of whole seasons at one time makes it hard for writers to develop characters. So you get some very shallow plots written since you can get that done really quickly.

It also makes it hard for viewers to get attached to the characters. I know I've watched a whole season in less than a week and have felt very unsatisfied. Similar to eating food just because it's available and you're hungry. I feel full and ready for another series. Yet, I barely remember what I saw and have no attachment to any of the characters. What could have been a great series is just a quick snack.

I would think quantity is more important than quality, as long as the quality exceeds a threshold that’s not particularly high.

Quality might get more subscribers, but they also want to keep them. To do that, there must frequently be something new to see.

It's hard to know what will be a success unless it's a rehash/remake. The Netflix strategy is to spend less per production on more productions to give more shots on goal. They can greenlight more productions and take more chances if each one is less expensive.
For the same reason every popular youtube video is not as good as a National Geographic Documentary or a George Carlin one man show.
So, National Geographic's secret to documentaries?
Quality is subjective. What you presumably mean is "fewer, but more expensive" originals.

You have to remember that a lot of cheap TV makes money. Sure, not many people may watch it, but that doesn't matter if it's cheap enough to make. That's the premise of a lot of the terrible reality TV you see.

The same principle applies to movies. The ideal film isn't another Star Wars or Avatar; it's the Blair Witch Project. It cost tens of thousands to make, but grossed almost $250 million globally.

You may notice that Netflix has a bunch of zombie movies and things. Horror films are generally cheap to make, and horror fans are a reliable audience.

I remember a specific case of this happening with a popular CBS tv show "The Unit". I thought it was quite good. Apparently a lot of other people did too because it was one of their most popular shows. But it was cancelled after 3 seasons and replaced with another garbage reality tv show like Jersey Shore, the Kardashians or Survivor or something.

The reason was that the Unit filmed in different locations and had lots of explosions and other things that made it expensive to film.

They decided they could replace it with a show one third as popular that had 1/20th the production cost.

From a business perspective, you can charge one third as much for ads and still come out way ahead because reality garbage costs nothing to make.

Scorpion was cancelled with a 10+ rating while shows like the Conners limp on with 1 rating.

The slot (night/time/length), demo rating, genre can have a huge impact but cost can be important.

"The unit" was cancelled with 9 million viewers after peaking at 16 a few years before. The problem was the average age of a person to watching was 55.

Netflix, and Amazon Prime also, the originals are for my exercise bike. Enough to hold my attention but not to hold it so much that I slow down. Back in the 70s and 80s CBS had a rotation of late night dramas that my sister described as "just enough plot". That's what a lot of these originals are.
For the same reason that most Hollywood movies have incredible VFX and plots that are nonsense.

Writing is HARD. It's one of the hardest things you can do, and being exceptional at it is rare, and even when you do it well people might not notice.

Whereas spectacle is relatively easy.

I don't think writing is that hard, or at least, crafting a good story with good characters should be well within the skills of people hired to be writers professionally.

I think there are a couple of problems around writing as a profession though. Foremost are executive meddling and focus grouping, which are both going to soften your writing to try and appeal to larger audiences.

Also there's an issue with writers being hired in teams on a single project, which absolutely prevents any kind of singular vision for a project from forming.

I'm so pissed off by "Netflix original" movies that I'm thinking about cancelling my subscription.

Most of the time (with a few exceptions) you notice that they are half baked movies or uninteresting stories that have been seen dozen of times.

But the thing is that for the past year or more, there are almost no more real recent "movie theater" grade or blockbuster movies that are added to the libraries. Everything is cheap or Netflix original or old movies that are available in tv for a long time.

So, when I want to watch a movie, I lose hours looking at the catalog and finally find nothing. In despair I go to Amazon prime to find movies...

Subscribe to the old school Netflix DVD service. It is alive and apparently still doing quite well. You get ALL the movies, and they available as soon as released.

Also as Netflix loses third-party programming they probably don't want to be seen as a barren wasteland.

Personally I don't have a problem with the mediocre shovelware originals so much as their itchy cancellation trigger finger that doesn't seem to give shows with devoted but small audiences enough of a chance to grow over a few seasons and at least finish their main story arcs. People are less likely to watch a series that simply ends on a permanent cliffhanger.

Netflix seems to be searching for the next Stranger Things and less willing to accept a spectrum of cult/niche hits.

They really do hope to see what sticks.

My opinion is find the most promising pilots, make them available, see what people are most receptive to, then greenlight a full season for the best performing ones.

The problem with Netflix now is that it is a pain in the butt to sift through the rubbish, to find the gems. It's content overload. I don't want to pay more per month to finance production of rubbish.

It's a poor approach for people like me. My main thing is video games, youtube, and reading. But I like really good TV series. I've enthusiastically watched Peaky Blinders as soon as it's available after I heard about it and picked it up after season 4. I didn't start watching Breaking Bad until Season 4 finished airing. Same with a bunch of other shows, Blacklist (S6), Game of Thrones (S4), Sherlock(S5), Mandalorian (S2), Ozarks (S3). That doesn't give a lot of shows time to catch my eye.

The ones I recall watching after S1 aired over the past decade are Fargo, Better Call Saul (because I saw BB), True Detective, House of Cards, Atlanta (because I'm from Atlanta), Lupin, because they got truly rave reviews. I'm even more conservative with Netflix shows now because it's pretty much a given that anything I even attempt to watch is going to get cancelled after a season or 2.

Lupin isn’t that good of a show. I think Netflix has the best shows of any media company year to year. They have so many. So Lupin is great, but Netflix has other high quality stuff too to make it not as impressive.

Atlanta because you’re from there? You wouldn’t watch it otherwise? I think it might be the best 30 min non sitcom ever.

No I just meant I checked it out because the name caught my eye. It's an amazing show.
I do still think you'd find those after some time, it would just be that the duds would already be weeded out for you. There aren't too many shows that gain a wide following only after their first or successive seasons, most either pick up a reasonable audience from the get-go, or they flop. People later discovering shows others found earlier will always be a thing.
We really don't know, but I feel like they fell into a classic engagement trap. By focusing just on engagement, they didn't measure important externalities to just optimizing engagement.

Sometimes optimizing near-term metrics, like engagement, is easier. But it doesn't get at what's important. You can optimize engagement, but harm lagging metrics like user retention and brand authority. In other words, you can easily create click-bait, but it will sully your brand, and just put you in a vicious race to the bottom as you chase more and more engagement, from fewer and fewer subscribers that aren't interested in your brand anymore.

Television has been in a race to the bottom for almost a century. Profitability is the optimization target not viewer edification or self-reported satisfaction. The fragmentation of the media market means viewers filling out the long tail. Way back when there were three channels and broadcasts ended at midnight. Now niches are filled with YouTube channels that can have as few as a dozen views.

The business model of monthly subscriptions incentivizes maintaining just enough quality and content updates to keep people from cancelling. Like World of Warcraft.

I mean it’s a joke in my household how bad a streaming service’s originals are. A lot of the time it’s reboots. Other times just a lame premise too targeted that won’t have a large amount of fans.
Netflix doesn’t MAKE originals, Netflix BUYS originals.

Netflix is a distributor, not a producer. Originals mean that they buy the rights to prevent people from watching the stuff elsewhere. They do partner with production companies, and maybe they do produce some content themselves but it’s really not their core business.

That said you could have asked why don’t they buy higher quality content?

Well, first they usually buy content _before_ it’s actually made. So difficult to say how the thing is going to turn out. So they need to diversify to make sure some of it is going to be good.

Then, they do buy a lot of high quality content. They won 16 academy awards and a lot of other awards. So at least the industry thinks some of it is pretty good.

And then there is the retainment problem. If you only had a little high quality content, people would just binge and find themselves without anything to watch and unsubscribe. So netflix has “shows you just can’t miss” to get people to subscribe, and then shows to keep people subscribed which tend to be of lower quality.

Also there is the platform content war fueled by tech money. Between the incumbents, (disney, hbo, etc,) and the new platforms (netflix, amazon, hulu, etc.) there are a lot of buyers on the market.

So the high quality stuff gets more and more expensive, and there’s less of it as it gets spread out.

That is wrong. Netflix actually does produce some of its originals. They a massive amount of studio space rented in Hollywood.
Netflix is the symptom of a greater problem in tech: "agile" and "ads" culture scaled and gone wrong.

1. Agile might work to test demand for software products, but when applied everywhere else it fails miserably. Just look at the horrible products released (and quickly terminated) using this method in the last 10 years. Except for Apple, the rest of the industry follows the experimentation dogma religiously, forcing producers to chase profits without regard for craft. Netflix's used this method to turn movie production into attention maximizing algorithms.

2. Tech (fueled by the ad industry) has penetrated Hollywood and injected propaganda (ex: woke) into every production. Entertainment has essentially been turned into adverts, where experimentation on greater ROI lead to the deterioration of quality. Think of content disguised as ads - Netflix has turned into another Google search experience.

The brainwashing machine is starting to crumble.

Netflix apparently has several problems:

1. You can spend more money for more quality, but there are diminishing returns. The price goes up faster than the quality does .

2. Spending more money doesn't guarantee higher quality, it is possible to produce expensive flops. So making fewer more expensive movies and shows increases their risk considerably.

3. As the studios and networks have shut off the content spigot in favor of their own streaming services, Netflix has a very large inventory hole to fill. Binge watching exacerbates this problem as it is easily possible for a user to consume an entire season over a weekend or even over a day, since some seasons are only eight episodes.

I think Netflix is going to try to spend their money a bit more strategically, perhaps changing the "season" model to something more flexible. Or maybe going the "feature film as pilot" route. There are problems with this in terms of locking down the availability of the key talent, but Netflix has been having good success with giving actor/writer/director/producer folks a piece of the action (eg. Jason Bateman is lead actor, director, and producer on Ozark), so maybe they can make that work.

Alternatively, if they continue with the spaghetti against the wall strategy, maybe they can do something about cancelled series ending in an abrubt never-to-be-resolved fashion. Either getting writers to eschew cliffhangers, or produce an ending episode that is only uploaded if the show is cancelled, or something.

Netflix absolutely needs to stop cancelling abruptly.

They must use their internal metrics to decide that a show isnt attracting a critical mass fast enough, then they cancel. I know there sometimes are other reasons due to increased costs of actors for following seasons etc but...

I have avoided almost every show that Netflix canceled abruptly without a conclusive ending.

I don't watch a lot (time constraints) so I check carefully before I choose to watch a new show. Netflix is full of shows I would have watched if they hadn't cancelled them. Their current strategy is ' leave a sour taste on enthusiast forums everywhere ' informing people like me to not waste my time.

I'm a year or 3 behind others in my viewing schedule and I know many in the same boat.

Hah. Pamela Sargent's Venus trilogy was my Wheel of Time. Venus of Dreams and Venus of Shadows came out in 1986 and 1988 respectively. The third volume Child of Venus only came out in 2001. It was a good book, but it seemed as though the author was a different person at that point, so it wasn't very satisfying to read.

Currently, I'm annoyed at the lack of followup volumes to Diane Duane's Omnitopia Dawn, which came out in 2010. I haven't read any of George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, and won't until it is done.

They don't know how to make things good. They probably think it's something you can measure. So they just make a ton and hope to get lucky.
Good screenplays and good screenwriters don't grow on trees. You cannot just showel more money, then ???, and then get masterpieces.
