Did the term “bit by bit” originate before or after computers?

Or before/after Shannon’s paper on a mathematical theory of communication?

Quite the opposite -- the computer term "bit" was named after the common word for a very small piece of something, from an ancient tongue called Old English. Just google the etymology of it, there's a wealth of information out there.
It's actually a pun - bit is short for "binary digit."
