Did the term “bit by bit” originate before or after computers? 2 points by boppo1 4y ago ↗ HN Or before/after Shannon’s paper on a mathematical theory of communication?
[–] allears 4y ago ↗ Quite the opposite -- the computer term "bit" was named after the common word for a very small piece of something, from an ancient tongue called Old English. Just google the etymology of it, there's a wealth of information out there. [–] duped 4y ago ↗ It's actually a pun - bit is short for "binary digit."
[–] asplake 4y ago ↗ Apparently the phrase was first recorded in 1849, and the word is very much older: https://www.dictionary.com/browse/bit--by--bit
