Ask HN: Learn Data and Distributed Systems

I want to learn about data systems and distributed systems. I have been told by multiple people to read "Designing Data Intensive Systems" However, starting off with that book doesn't seem easy. Can someone suggest what path to take? What are the pre-reads for a book like this one. Fyi - I have some experience writing SQL queries and have decent exposure to Machine Learning
